Just so everyone's aware, I'll be making myself available for anyone who feels that they're in need of counseling in light of what happened.

On a similar note, especially in light of Mark's disappearance, if anyone is interested in volunteering as a counselor to those who might need it, I'd be happy to discuss how to make that work.

Why? Wardens here are untrained, and they do a good job. And besides that, Soothing can go a long way.

Because treating mental health issues with Soothing - or medication - alone isn't enough, and it isn't something you're going to know how to do successfully without having the proper training and background information to reference. While parts of that probably should apply to being a warden as well, I don't choose who comes here, but ethically, I don't feel comfortable letting someone without the experience or background knowledge present themselves as being qualified to help in this area.

In this case, yes it does. Just like Dr. Banner wouldn't feel comfortable letting anyone with a passing interest call themselves a doctor, I'm not comfortable with just anyone calling themselves a therapist. I'm sorry if you have an issue with that, but it isn't something I'm interested in being cavalier with.

No, it's a question of qualification and training. I'm not trying to suggest that Zane isn't empathetic, [And he's a little offended that that's apparently what you're thinking is happening here.] But empathy alone doesn't mean you're qualified to help someone through serious emotional or mental issues. I really don't understand what the issue is, here.

No one elected me, I'm just - to my knowledge - the only one here who has any relevant training in the field of psychology besides Dr. Lecter. I have a degree, and Mark did this for a living. If someone else more qualified than me who isn't a cannibalistic serial killer shows up, I'd be happy to hand the job over and just assist as necessary. I appreciate that Zane wants to help, but this really isn't something that you can just volunteer to do because you want it. It wouldn't be ethical for me to accept the help of someone who's untrained and then put someone's mental and emotional well being in their hands, which again would be the same if I was a medical doctor accepting the help of someone who had only basic knowledge of how to treat an injury and then told them to help reattach a limb.

I understand that you care about Zane and you apparently don't think very highly of me, but if you think this is me trying to shut him out or tell him he isn't capable because I don't trust or like him, you obviously haven't been paying much attention over the entire time he's been here. And if there is some issue between the two of us that I'm not presently aware of, you're welcome to bring it to my attention instead of passive aggressively implying that I'm acting as some sort of tyrant who's unqualified to do his job.

It sounded. Ambiguous. It sounded like a barrier. He protested because he wants to help.

I know you hate being misunderstood, Charles, so - clarify.

I said he would need some training first. I never said he wasn't allowed, or that his abilities or his life experiences or whatever else made him unqualified and that would never change. But it isn't ethical to hand over the mental health and well being of another person over to someone who has absolutely no training, education or experience with treating mental illness and then call them a therapist. I don't understand why people aren't understanding that, and in the interest of being totally honest, I think it's ridiculous that I'm being put under fire for believing that.

You aren't under fire. You're just all making each other defensive. The more you talk about degrees and accreditation, the more it sounds like something you couldn't even impart on your own, because you aren't an institution.

I agree with you, okay. He has good instincts but he has...blind spots and fault lines and he needs to learn how to be - professional, for lack of a better word, before I'd hold him up as someone anyone could come to. But he's like me, he's going to talk to people and meddle whether he quite knows how to make it any better or not.

So don't tell him he needs training. Tell him you want to train him, and when would be a good time. It sounds like semantics but the implications are different. He might drag his feet a little now, see defensiveness above, but he likes to learn.
